I was sitting at my desk yesterday when I received an invitation to watch a video. It was a video by a group called Portlandia: Portland Dream of the '90s. (Video contains Adult Content)
I had to laugh because some of the words hit me as truth.
Do you sometimes wish you were someone else? Do you want to run away to the circus? Do you want to become a chef? How about this, did you ever want to become a doctor but then decided you didn't like the sight of blood or needles?
What makes people choose the lifestyle they choose? If you ask psychologist they tell you it is a set of circumstances you have in your developmental years where you received love or attention, familiar circumstances. Each event creates a bit of information about your world.
But what about those people who completely re-invent themselves and let the past go? Coaches believe that you can make it up as you go along!
In Portland we have all kinds of fun things to do to help us develop new experiences and re-invent ourselves. We have alternative groups, Keep Portland Weird, Clown School, Healing Centers, Personal Growth and Development. We are so fortunate to live in a city that is so diverse and flexible we can re-invent any part of ourselves at any time.
I was talking to a client the other day and she really loved one of the exercises from our workshops. I want to give you the opportunity to experience it.
This could be fun for you! First free your mind, let go and recognize that events are separate from the actual meaning we place on them. The beliefs we once held about ourselves change as we mature and develop socially. Belief can change in an instant.
Visualization Exercise:
Imagine for a moment that you are one of several writers for a new play. You have been given an assignment to write a character. The character is based on all the traits that you would like to have in your own life, that you imagine would make you the best you can be.
Visualize this character having only the life goals that you would have, traits that would make them unstoppable. This character would create exactly what they want, when they want it. Now tell me about this character. You can write it, make a movie about it, create a PowerPoint presentation, record it or act it out. Be creative, it might even be fun to find some friends or family to play with as a Holiday Gift.
I would love to hear your responses, please post your comments below, add a link if you upload this experement online. It will be fun to see how creative you can be!
JOY To The World & Portland!
