“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7
Three people that I know last week told me they needed a root canal. I sensed a spiritual attack on God’s people because of the surge of this problem within such a short period of time. Now don’t get me wrong, family, most times a root canal is just that: a root canal—a need for repair because of a damage in the structure of the tooth for whatever reason. Don’t go looking for a demon behind every cavity. We need to be spiritual, but let’s not cross over to spooky :-) (I borrowed this line from the Reverend Dr. Creflo Dollar).
However, there are many times, more frequently than we realize, where a physical issue has resulted from a spiritual attack. Issues concerning God’s creation start out in the spiritual realm and manifest in the natural realm. The whole fall of mankind originated in Heaven with the downfall and casting out of Lucifer (now known as Satan) onto the earth. We bind and loose in the spiritual realm to cut off, change, or bring forth into the natural realm (Daniel 9:20-23, Matthew 18:18).
In this situation with the sudden need for root canals, I sensed a spirit behind it. According to the American Association of Endodontists, a root canal is a procedure, done on the inside of the tooth, to save it (aae.org).
Teeth represent individuals, more specifically, the born-again believer and a believer’s walk with the Lord (© 2011, Thompson and Beale, The Divinity Code; © 2010, Milligan, Understanding the Dreams You Dream). This being said, our walk with God is hindered by those things inside of us that God still needs to work out of us, as we walk more closely with Him.
Satan will try to keep us from developing a more intimate walk with the Father; and if He can’t get us to fall away by attacking us head on through trials and tribulations, then he will resort to much more subtle tactics by camouflaging those things within us, those mentalities, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs, that we may not even be aware of.
Just like with a damaged nerve within a tooth, you may or may not feel that there is damage within the tooth, and the tooth may look perfectly fine, when in reality, it is slowly decaying from the inside out because of what’s going on inside. Speaking of nerves, am I hitting one today, family? Well good! That means we are growing in the Lord. Now that’s progress!
And speaking of growing in the Lord, He has been flooding my wife and me with dreams. For the past approximately ten years, I have received regular dreams and visions from God; however, He has really stepped up these revelations in both of us, with multiple dreams each night. We are a bit behind in getting the understanding of these events, and have about ten dreams still to interpret.
One of these dreams involved a spiritual attack on me, last week. In my dream, I was working with one of my spiritual mothers—a mighty woman of God, and we were moving chairs into a barn. While I was moving one of the chairs, I noticed a lion running toward me from the west. As this beast approached me, it turned into a demon and lunged for my neck. I took authority over this demon, rebuked it, and wrestled it off of me; but not before it drew blood. Thankfully, it was only a superficial bite.
When I awoke, I immediately looked up “neck,” which means “self-willed, stubborn.” I must admit that this took me by surprise. But as I pressed in for revelation, the Lord showed me an area in which I was in fact being self-willed and stubborn. In doing so, I had given the devil legal access to attack me. I quickly repented, which removed that undesired access.
Had it not been for my Faithful Father exposing this area in me, which was attracting the darkness, it could have been allowed to continue to grow from the inside out until the damage it caused was much more significant. Although this portion of the dream has been construed, there is still much more revelation that I must press in to obtain.
This is why the Psalmist King David prayed earnestly “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). My Bible commentary reveals David’s recognition that “wickedness may be lurking in the recesses of his heart” (© 2002, Thomas Nelson, Inc. New Spirit Filled Life Bible).
Pastor Francis Frangipane writes with astounding revelation “When Satan rebelled against God, he was placed under eternal judgment in what the Bible calls ‘pits’ or ‘bonds’ of darkness. The devil and the fallen angels with him, have been relegated to live in darkness. The darkness does not simply mean ‘lightless regions’ or areas void of visible light. Thus Jesus warned, ‘Take heed, that the light which is in you be not in darkness (Lk 11:35)…when you harbor sin, the ‘light which is in you’ is ‘in darkness.’ Satan has a legal access, given to him by God, to dwell in the domain of darkness. We must grasp this point: The devil can traffic in any area of darkness, even the darkness that still exists in a Christian’s heart” (© 1989, Francis Frangipane, The Three Battlegrounds).
So what’s eating you, my brother? What’s simmering beneath your surface unawares, my sister? Let’s not wait as it lies in waiting, family! Let us move forward with a heart like David, making it a daily practice to ask the Lord to examine us, and to remove anything in us that is not like Him; because anything that is left behind will surely leave a bad taste in our mouth.
Father, like King David, we cry out for You to search us and know our hearts, and remove any wickedness in us. Create in us a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within (Psalm 51:10). Help us to walk in the light as You are in the light—Your Light that is You (1 John 1:7). And forgive us, Holy Father, for every sin, every iniquity, every transgression, known and unknown, that we have committed against You. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, blot out our transgressions, and remember our sins no more (1 John 1:9, Isaiah 43:25). In Jesus Name, we thank You that our hearts are constantly on Your Divine Altar, kept clean by His Blood and watched over by the Light of Your Holy Spirit. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to allow God to examine your heart daily. Choose submit yourself always before the Lord your God—Your Defense and Strong Tower. Humble yourself daily under the Mighty Hand of God that He will exalt you in due season (1 Peter 5:6). And continue to fight the good fight of reporting for your daily inspection—morning, noon, and night; for God, your Eternal Enamel, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
