Whether you work or occasionally have to run errands, there are times that the family dog is left alone. Have you ever wondered what your dog does when home alone? Some dogs, especially the smaller breeds are either crated or restricted in a special room for its own protection. If this is the case, you can contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian, Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home for appropriate crates, bed and other items to entertain your pet in your absence.
Some dog behaviorists have done research in order to catch the mischievous dog doing what he does best when left alone. I have written previous articles on boredom in dogs, stating that if your pet is not given specific activities to stimulate its mind, it will find other fun things to do like chewing the couch, gnaw on the door, shelves, table, clothes and more along with dig in the trash or anything its little mind will come up with.
Just like kids can have a field day when mom and dad are gone, your dog’s imagination can go wild, also figuring on ways to stay busy while you are away. Are they watching their favorite pet TV shows, raiding the refrigerator, curling up on the “forbidden” furniture or having friends over for a “paw-ty?” Do not underestimate the imagination of your canine family member!
In reality many pets have a difficult time being left alone. This condition is known as separation anxiety. In such cases, this can be a medical and behavioral problem needing professional intervention. However, most times it is just a case of boredom and your dog will look for anything to occupy its time. Keep your dog stimulated with puzzle games and toys stuffed with its favorite treats to fill hours of fun and activity. Have several of these toys on hand, providing a different one each day or this game will soon get old!
Most often pets just nap while in your absence so they can smother you with love and attention upon your return. Unless your home looks like a tornado hit, you can assume that your pet has been quietly waiting for your happy return. As long as you provide and enrich your dog with suitable games and puzzles to stimulate its mind and expend its energies, you will be returning to a happy home and a content pup. As for kitty, he’s napping, jumping on window sills and peering out, looking for a nearby bird or another kitty friend whether you are there or not!
