Not everyone is cut out to own a home based business. Many people will start thinking about starting one with the hopes that they can be available more for their family, or may just be looking for the "freedom" of being their own boss and not having to answer to anyone else. Being a home based business owner takes a lot of discipline and even some sacrifice - while the ultimate goal of working from home may be to generate income and provide you with more flexibility, it's not likely to happen from the day you hang your open for business sign.
Having the following personality traits is a requirement to successfully owning a home based business:
Motivation - you need enough motivation to get you out of bed and in front of your computer or on the phone every work day - even though there is no time clock to punch or boss looking over your shoulder.
Resilience and Stamina - home based business owners need the ability to bounce back and keep going even if things aren't progressing the way you had hoped. Working in a home based business has many ups and downs, but if you give up during the first "down" period you'll miss out on all the possible "ups" to come.
Organization - operating a business under the same roof where you live takes organization! Depending on the type of business you run, you may have business supplies, equipment or products to store in addition to all of your family's belongings. Organizing family schedules around work schedules can be a real challenge and you'll have a number of conflicts if you don't keep an organized calendar.
Ability to Say "No" - don't underestimate the importance of knowing how to say no. You may have never been in a position where you've had to think about whether you possess this ability or not - but as a home based business owner you'll soon have more opportunities to say no than you've ever had before! Once it's known that you work from home, neighbors, family and well-meaning friends will start asking you to lunch, help with errands or child care. If you don't learn how to say no, you will soon find you have no time left to get any work done.
If you think running a business out of your home means sleeping late every day, going out to lunch with friends and cutting out early at the end of each day - you probably will not find being a home based business owner a successful venture. On the other hand, if you're motivated to work hard, prepared to weather the ups and downs of home entrepreneurship, and ready to start your home business plan - you just might have what it takes to start your own home based business.

Oh how true...about the saying 'no' part. You can't believe how many family and friends call me during the day to 'chat'. I keep telling them if I was in an office, would you call me to 'chat'? I've now learned how to screen my calls and pick up when I want.
