By nature, Americans (and moms especially) are busy people. We spend so much of our lives going a hundred miles an hour. We multitask in a million different ways. Work, family, friends, school, kids’ activities, PTA meetings, committee meetings, cleaning, cooking, appointments… the list goes on and on. Most of us are not very good at saying NO. If we lost our smart phone (or in my case my old fashioned desk calendar) our worlds would fall apart.
There is however a price that comes with this fast-paced lifestyle… the death of “Me” time. And I’ll tell you something… it is hard, nearly impossible, to be truly healthy and happy without “Me” time. A go, go, go type of lifestyle leads to being overworked, stressed out and can end in sickness and discontent.
“Me” time can be anything that really makes you happy. The concept is simple really. Just take time to do something for yourself. It is different for everyone but the end result is the same – a feeling of rejuvenation, of calm, of happiness. Something that is just for you.
Think about what makes you feel this way. For me it is often curling up with a good book without interruptions or a phone chat with a good friend. It could be a long walk, a hot bath, buying yourself flowers, getting a massage, taking a yoga class, going biking or having a glass of wine on the back porch while watching the sunset. The options are limitless.
I know it can be hard to find a way to fit “Me” time in, but do it anyway. No excuses. Get out that trusty smart phone or calendar and schedule it in. Start with five minutes if that is all you think you can fit in. Then try 10 minutes or even half an hour. As you start to make yourself a priority, you will find out how much better you feel.
So here’s the plan. Make a date with yourself. Do it right now! And most importantly stick to it! Don’t stand yourself up. It’s okay to put yourself first sometimes. In fact is is essential to put YOUR health and happiness first some of the time.
