Do you believe in yourself? This seems like a silly question, but I believe that it is at the heart of a successful job search.
I was chatting with a client over the weekend about this. She's been out of work for a while and is in the process of finding a job. She's not had much success and has reached the point of taking anything. I told her this is unacceptable and will lead to further frustration in her job search. Companies don't want someone who will take anything. We review her resume and I suggested some changes.
The first step I gave her is to make an honest assessment of her skills and abilities. I told her to be honest with herself about this area. Yesterday, she told me that this area of defining her skills, abilities, values, dreams, and passions has been more difficult than she anticipated. It’s because she hasn’t spent much time thinking about it before. She started believing the lies of the job search.
Unfortunately, a lot of people sell themselves short in this area. It is much easier to deal with a child in the area of skills and abilities than adults. Think about it. Young kids believe that they can do almost anything. However, as they grow older, more doubt creeps in and shapes the direction they move in. Adults will do the same thing. They sell themselves short because they didn’t get the right degree, or they worked in one particular industry for a prolonged period. They fail to see all of the soft skills they developed along the way. It’s these soft skills that really determine your success at work.
Believing in yourself and having others believe in you, leads to self-confidence. Self-confidence is a critical component in the job search process. It reflects in your resume, the interview process, and ultimately in your work. This is one area where I see the advantage of working with a coach. A good coach will help you discover yourself and get you on the right path to finding work that you were designed to do.
