A finely mulched planting bed is a thing of beauty. To make sure you get to enjoy the maximum benefit from your mulching efforts, there are a couple things to remember.
You must properly prepare the area that is going to be mulched. Start by pulling out the obvious weeds and debris.
Till up the planting bed with a rake or other such garden tool. As you start tilling, clear the area of any new weeds you bring to the surface.
Rake any existing mulch so that it is not clumped into an isolated area. Spread it evenly throughout the area. Keep in mind that too much excessive old mulch is not good. If you find that you have too much old mulch, rake it up and remove it.
Too much mulch can actually have an unhealthy effect on the planting bed. It can retain too much moisture causing plant rot.
The key to making a lawn look fantastic is the same thing that makes a planting bed look amazing. You must have a nice clean edge.
Grab a flat head shovel. Start at one side of the planting area and make a new fresh line. All you need to do is put the flat head on the ground and step on so that the shovel head goes down about an inch into the soil.
Continue this exercise for the entire shape and length of the bed. Pull out any new grass or weeds that you may have lodged into the area to be mulched.
The goal with mulch is too both keep weeds from taking over your planting beds and also to look pleasing to the eye.
This is a great early spring project that will help your planting beds look great heading into the warm season.
