With the popularity of Christian movies increasing, you no longer find yourself sitting in the pew of your local church, staring at a pull-down projector screen and eating cold popcorn. The thrill of a Saturday darkened theater is lost on a Sunday night when you are sitting in a stained-glass sanctuary. Due to the response of film makers, more and more movies in this genre are being made. Faith-based movie goers are now finding themselves in their local movie theater, with all the bells and whistles, including fresh popcorn. According to Christian Post, “Christian and faith-based films have performed well at the box office this year, with Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" taking in over $350 million worldwide, while "God's Not Dead," "Heaven Is for Real" and the Roma Downey and Mark Burnett-produced "Son of God" all staying in the top 10 at the box office for several weeks.” Excitement is growing for the latest edition to the faith-based movie goers, as Clint Eastwood is no longer the only Eastwood who is going to “make our day”. Opening in select theaters in July 11, “The Perfect Wave” stars Scott Eastwood, who is Clint Eastwood’s son, in a true story of Pastor Ian McCormack who experiences death and yet, awakens on an island to find redemption. However, what happens on that island will change the path of McCormack’s life forever, and for eternity. The movie follows this amazing story of getting a second chance. “The Perfect Wave” is a full length, dramatic, theatrical feature film based on the true story of a 24-year old, New Zealander, Ian McCormack. The film was shot exquisitely in South Africa, Bali and Java under the direction of internationally renowned television commercial director Bruce MacDonald.

The international cast is headed by Scott Eastwood (Ian McCormack), Rachel Hendrix (Annabel) who had the lead role in October Baby, and veteran performer Cheryl Ladd (Mrs McCormack) who is best known from the TV series Charlie’s Angels. Top South African surfers Rosy Hodge and Matt Bromley also have roles in the movie.

From the official website for “The Perfect Wave”, ‘Deep within every surfer is a heart hungry for adventure, yearning to be free, to break away and let go. Seeking purity and truth, they have a willingness to risk it all, to push on whatever the cost, overcoming every obstacle and risking everything in the ultimate pursuit of the perfect wave. This is Ian McCormack’s story.

Director Bruce Macdonald has described the movie as "a 'love story with four pillars' a mother's love, a young man's love for surfing, first love, and most importantly, God's love."

He added, "This film shares the amazing story of God's plan for Ian's life and reminds viewers that no matter how far you run, you can never outrun God's love."

In an interview with http://gatewaynews.co.za “Making the movie the Perfect Wave was a calling from God but there was a time when it seemed that it might never happen, says Bruce MacDonald, the South African director of the inspiring true-life testimony film that will be released in SA, Australia and the USA in March 2014."

"He says seeing the blockbuster Christian movie 'Fireproof' in 2009 sparked the inspiration that led to making The Perfect Wave film about itinerant New Zealand surfer, Ian Mc Cormack’s life-changing, close encounter with God after he was stung by deadly box jellyfish. Cape Town-based TV commercial director MacDonald’s says the project was birthed after his wife asked him to watch Fireproof. He found the movie incredible and the experience planted the seed in him to direct a feature film. He just didn’t know which film it would be. Sometime later his mother-in-law mentioned the name Ian MacCormack, and Mac Donald said it was then that he knew God had chosen this testimony for his venture.”

“Fireproof”, a Christian drama film released by Samuel Goldwyn Films was the highest-grossing independent film of 2008, grossing over $33,000,000, and sparked the challenge, “Love Dare”. Christian movies gained momentum as a result of the movie “Fireproof”

The following is the press release for “The Perfect Wave”

LOS ANGELES, June 24, 2014 – Clint Eastwood’s son and rising Hollywood star Scott Eastwood (“Gran Torino,” “Flags of Our Fathers”), Rachel Hendrix (“October Baby”) and Cheryl Ladd (“Charlie’s Angels”), star in the Christian film, “The Perfect Wave,” which is set to open in select theatres on July 11. “The Perfect Wave” follows the true story of Ian McCormack, who grew up surfing the waters of New Zealand.

The film, which was shot on location in South Africa, Australia, Bali, Mauritius and New Zealand, opened in South Africa earlier this year and is already receiving positive reactions from U.S. audiences.

“‘The Perfect Wave’ is a strong witness to the redemptive power of Jesus Christ,” said Jim Young of Crossroads Church UMC in Jacksonville, Florida. “It is excellent for youth groups, college and career, as well as the whole family.”

In “The Perfect Wave,” Ian (played by Eastwood), yearning for adventure, sets out on a journey with his best friend to surf some of the most famous and challenging destinations throughout Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa in search of the mythical “perfect wave.”

During his adventure, Ian falls in love with a beautiful, free-spirited girl, Annabelle (portrayed by Hendrix). Ian’s pursuit of her leads him to the African island of Mauritius, where his life is forever changed by an encounter with a school of box jellyfish during a fateful evening swim. Infamous for venom so deadly that a single sting can kill a man, Ian is stung multiple times, and pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Following a divine post-mortem encounter, Ian miraculously awakens with a transformed understanding of life and a chance to begin anew.

“I’m very inspired by this film. There is a terrific spirit of adventure and an important reminder that you just have to trust God and go for it. Not to mention the film captures the beauty of some of the best surf spots in the world,” said Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California.

“The Perfect Wave” has been described by Director Bruce Macdonald as a “love story with four pillars”: a mother’s love, a young man’s love for surfing, first love, and most importantly, God’s love. He added, “This film shares the amazing story of God’s plan for Ian’s life and reminds viewers that no matter how far you run, you can never outrun God’s love.”

The film was directed by Macdonald, an internationally renowned commercial director, and was produced by seven-time Emmy-winning U.S. Producer S. Bryan Hickox.

“I have been blessed to share my story throughout the world,” said Ian. “The release of this film in South Africa and now America provides a vehicle to help spread God’s message of never failing love to an even broader audience.”
