In today's Do It All Mamas (& Papas) the spotlight is on Caroline Freedman, owner and Co-Founder of NurturMe, and mom to Audrey 3, and a second child due in the Fall of 2011.
Examiner: Tell me something unique/interesting about yourself.
Caroline: I left a long and promising career in corporate America to join my good friend, Lauren McCullough, on the adventure of a lifetime, launching an organic baby food line called NurturMe.
Examiner: What is your business all about?
Caroline: NurturMe (www.nurturme.com) is the first and only certified-organic, all-natural and gluten-free baby food made from nutrient-rich, quick-dried fruits and vegetables. By quick-drying its ingredients, NurturMe preserves the essential nutrients and phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables, making it one of the most natural and nutritious baby foods on the market. I created this product out of necessity. As a new mom, I needed a little extra convenience in my life, but was not willing to compromise on nutrition or my green sensibilities when it came to feeding my little one. NurturMe is the perfect baby/toddler food option for the modern parent who leads a busy life. NurturMe is great for travelling too as each travel-friendly, palm-sized pouch of NurturMe weighs less than one ounce and has a shelf life of 24 months.
Examiner: What is your favorite product that you make or sell and why do you like or recommend it?
Examiner: Why did you start your business?
Caroline: I felt the products that were available on the market did not offer a broad enough selection of healthy, tasty foods and were packaged in a very wasteful way. When I had the idea of dried baby food, I immediately knew that our compact and long-lasting foods would enable simpler, less wasteful packaging options as well.
Examiner: What secret do you have to share with other parents about "having it all" with your family and business?
Caroline: I rely heavily on others to help me “have it all”; it’s certainly not something that is easily accomplished on one’s own! My husband Joey, who is a very hands-on dad and a huge NurturMe fan, gives me full support at home, while my co-founder is very understanding and flexible with me at the office. We plan NurturMe meetings around pick up times and “family time” and I regularly travel with Joey and Audrey to work-related events. .
Examiner: What is the number one piece of advice you have for other parents?
Caroline: I think it’s very important to tell your kids that you love them, all the time and to show them affection. This is very easy to do and goes a long way towards instilling them with confidence a sense of security and happiness.
Examiner: What is your (and your kids) favorite family activity?
Caroline: I guess I’d say dancing. It’s easy to do (we like to keep it low maintenance!) and only involves turning on some good music and having some fun. A born Austinite, Audrey already has excellent taste in music, thanks to our regular dance sessions in the kitchen.
