In today's Do It All Mamas (& Papas) the spotlight is on mom of four Dr. Jane Scott, founder of Tortle.
Examiner: Tell me something unique/interesting about yourself.
Jane: I was lucky enough to spend my entire childhood traveling the world. From Mombasa, Kenya to Manchester, England to Hobart, Tasmania to name a few. And a fun fact is that my four children were born on three different continents! I am a physician, who has specialized in Pediatrics and Neonatology. I have a passion for helping children and my mission at this time in my life is to eradicate flat head syndrome for all children in all parts of the world.
Examiner: What is your business all about?
Jane: My business is called Tortle Products. The web site is www.tortle.com. We create functional products including Tortle a soft, comfortable beanie that is a non-invasive affordable solution that treats mild cases and early-diagnosed positional plagiocephaly and torticollis in young infants (Flathead Syndrome), and can prevent it from ever occurring.
Examiner: What is your favorite product that you make or sell and why do you like or recommend it?
Jane: My favorite product is our TORTLE infant beanie. I love this product because it is so simple, user-friendly and inexpensive. Its whole function is to help parents to position their infants heads correctly wherever they are resting.
Examiner: Why did you start your business?
Jane: I started my business while practicing medicine. In the past five years I have noticed an epidemic increase in the number of infants who have developed flat head syndrome, Plagiocephaly and torticollis. In addition learning that research on these infants was showing evidence of other associated medical problems including developmental delays, this inspired me as well to create a parent aid for moms and dads that would be usable in all locations, traveling with baby as needed.
Examiner: What secret do you have to share with other parents about "having it all" with your family and business?
Jane: My philosophy regarding family and business, is that there is nothing more rewarding than a family coming together to do something good for others. My family is doing this and I think the most important ingredient is patience and understanding.
Examiner: What is the number one piece of advice you have for other parents?
Jane: Keep your kids as your first priority throughout their lives. Enjoy your children and keep a sense of humor.
Examiner: What is your (and your kids) favorite family activity?
Jane: Our favorite family activity is to enjoy a meal together and exchange stories.
