Does the fashion industry have unrealistic expectations for their models? Everyone knows that the modeling industry is competitive, exhausting, and daunting if your body measurements aren't "proportional." However, Nigel Barker slams this in a recent interview, and advises casting call directors and industry professionals to be realistic! One model, Morgan Pete shares her story about the harsh reality of the modeling industry:
Weight: 115 lbs
"I’ve been modeling for 2 years. I’ve modeled for Sky Blue Clothing Line, Macy’s, by Smith NY, In Exchanged, and some of these have been featured in New Orleans Fashion week and the Bridal Expo at the Cajundome. I was also selected by Indrea Gordon for Miami and New York Fashion Week. A month ago, I went to a casting call for a Couture Fashion Show and the designer said that I was gorgeous, stunning, and beautiful, but because of the way my body is proportioned, I would not be chosen for this particular fashion show. This was the first show I was ever rejected for and the reason for it pretty much opened my eyes to a new world. Those girls in the magazines have to be PERFECT, perfect face, perfect size, and perfect height. Over the years, we have molded America into what we think is “perfect.” We need the world to know that just because they are not a size 4 does not make them any less than someone who is. I am a college student, an employer, and a model. For so long, I was ashamed of my butt, and while many may think this is not an issue, for me it was. Now, that I am older I embrace it and I love my body. I have seen so many people try so hard to lose weight to fit the clothes on the girl in a magazine or down a runway when in reality without them (‘imperfect person’) our viewers and our customers, there would be no need for a runway or magazines. I do not have the perfect body for a high fashion model, but that did not stop me from following my dream. I’m making it, I’m dedicating my time to it, and I am giving back. Imperfection makes you who you are."
Now that Mercedes-Benz Fashion week is in full force, I test you to take a look at the models coming down the runway, or in the magazines, and see if you see any commonalities with you and the model.
