Do Christians Need to be Careful?

But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet,
and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
Ezekiel 33:6

The Bible makes it very clear. In the end times there will be much deception. Jesus says in Matthew 24:4 "Take heed that no man deceive you." That includes me. I caution you to weigh everything that anybody says against scripture. It is possible that someone may speak 95% truth but the 5% that is not true may lead you down the wrong path. Matthew 24:23-25 says "Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not." For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.

We have been forewarned. This is not a world for the naïve. We must be vigilant, and we must be in prayer unceasingly to prevent us from being one of those unfortunates that get detoured from the path of Christ. We humans very much detest having to be careful. It's not much fun to be wary and to distrust people and things. This is true in the world of physical health as well as spiritual matters. Try to warn people about the dangers of hotdogs or soda pop and see what kind of response you get. People don't want to be bothered by facts. They want the world to conform to their idea of it.

I warned people the other day about the possible danger of a movie. I was met by a response of "I believe in a God of mercy and love." Well, so do I, but I also believe in the devil and that he is a schemer who is constantly at work to undermine my relationship with God. Movies and books are a great way to distract people and distort their world view. Hopefully the reverse is true and proper movies can bring the correct focus. That's why I make movies and write books. Some people are under the impression that if they just believe that God will take care of them and protect them from this evil, He will. I think it requires cooperation on our part. Perhaps the way God protects us is by showing us the true nature of things when we study and ask Him about them. Most of us like a good detective story and tales of intrigue where truth must be sought out diligently. We have fun figuring out where the truth lies. Unfortunately we don't seem to like to apply such diligence to our own lives. Without it, we are ripe for deception.

Let me use a sad analogy. I have a friend whose niece was killed in a train accident. At the time of her death she had a piece of paper in her pocket with a list of things she was going to do for God. You would think that someone so devoted to God would have the Lord's protection. However this young lady acted foolishly. She knew a train was coming and tried to drive through the crossing before the train arrived. She lost the race and her life. Jesus told us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. That does not sound like He wanted us to be naïve and clueless, which leads to carelessness. The book of Proverbs extols the virtue of wisdom. I strongly suggest you seek that gift. Wisdom is not knowledge or information, but rather the skill to sift through knowledge and facts and to extract the meaningful and beneficial ideas and to apply them to life accordingly. Wisdom and prayer are the only things that will allow us to escape the deception that could derail the very elect.
