On your way up to Green Bay WI for a football game or up to the Rhinelander-Eagle River area for a North Woods getaway, stop in Appleton, WI for chocolate and a visit to Houdini’s childhood town. Long known as a paper production center on the Fox River, Appleton is also home to Lawrence University. So use or pass along some of the tips here to friends and family visiting the school.
First, comes chocolate.
At Vande Walle's Candies you can watch the melting, blending, mold-making process and sample some yummy pieces before deciding what to take to nosh on for the rest of your drive.
It may sound as if Appleton is all about treats but it has the fascinating History Museum in a castle-like former Masonic Temple. Go there to see and try Harry Houdini's tricks and learn a bit about his life, shows and why Appleton is the place he considered his hometown. The museum is across from Lawrence University.
