The Democratic National Committee banned gift baskets from churches in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area, claiming the churches hold views on women's issues that run contrary to the Democratic platform, Todd Starnes reported at Fox News on Wednesday.
“They told us our views on women’s rights are contrary to the Democratic party platform,” David Benham, lead organizer of the Charlotte714 movement told Fox.
According to Starnes, the group consists of more than 100 churches in the area that gathered to pray for the convention. Over 9,000 gathered last Sunday in worship and prayer.
"A gathering of some 200 Muslims praying in Charlotte was given extensive national coverage. The massive Christian received scant coverage," Starnes added.
Benham said that 56 churches "adopted" a delegation and put together gift baskets welcoming the delegates. They also offered assistance in transportation, childcare or spiritual matters.
But the DNC rebuffed their welcome.
“We were just trying to display Southern hospitality,” Benham said. “We wanted them to know we were happy to serve them.”
Democrats, however, told city officials the Christians would not be welcome.
“I got a call from the mayor’s office speaking on behalf of the convention and they asked us not to participate,” Benham added. “They told us our views on women’s rights are contrary to the platform.”
The Democratic Party platform supports abortion for any reason or no reason at all until birth, and supports taxpayer funding of abortions.
“I was blown away and could not believe it,” Benham said.
"Benham said it is true that all the churches are pro-life – but the baskets did not include a single political or pro-life message. They just wanted to give them regional candies and a welcome letter," Starnes said.
The DNC did not return requests for comments.
We reported earlier that the 2012 platform removed all references to God, and convention attendees booed when the original 2008 language was re-inserted into the platform. Now it seems that some in the Democratic Party have become so anti-Christian that they cannot even accept gifts from them.
“The Democrats have spit in the face of God. They spit in the face of unborn children,” Benham told Fox. “They spit in the face of marriage. They are spitting in God’s face. Americans need to rise up and see to it they have their day and are escorted out of power in this country.”
Nevertheless, Benham says 18 different groups are praying for the convention twice a day - once in the morning and again in the evening.
