Harmony Muzik is a local musician with a knack for thinking outside the box (see: Law of the Few). Her latest project is organizing a showcase of DC artists to perform at the SXSW music festival. SXSW (South by Southwest) is held annually in Austin, Texas and is one of the largest music festivals in the United States.
The title of her showcase is DMVINCIBLE and will feature standout performers like Fat Trel, X.O., Tabi Bonney, Phil Ade, Kingpen Slim, Boobe (from the Oy Boyz), and Whitefolkz. The host of this event will be Grammy-nominated singer Raheem DeVaughn.
According to Harmony, this will be the first DC hip-hop show in the history of SXSW.
"Many areas have held regional showcases in the past (New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Chicago), but not DC. This will be a first."
DMVINCIBLE came together through a collaboration between Harmony and Dre "The Mayor" (368 Music Group).
"I came to Dre with the idea because I had already secured the venue. I have performed there previously and I have a (professional) relationship with the club manager," says Harmony. "When I called Dre, he said that he, Tabi, and Raheem were talking about doing a showcase at SXSW, but didn't have a venue yet. So it all worked out perfectly."
Once the show was finalized it was easy to get all of the artists and their management on board. SXSW can be beneficial for unsigned musicians because it gives them the opportunity to network with representatives from almost every major and independent record label in the country. Harmony, who will also perform at DMVINCIBLE, believes a strong showing at the festival can push DC artists a little bit further into the consciousness of the music industry.
"I hope to bring the DMV talent to a national platform. We're ready to go down to Austin like a family and put on for the (DC) area," she says. "It will be great exposure for all of the artists involved and for everyone who is a part of our music scene."
DMVINCIBLE takes place on March 18, 2011 at the Victory Grill (1104 E. 11th Street, Austin, Texas).
