Since graduating from the University of Illinois-Chicago, I've been busy yet broke. Most of my time is spent looking for stories at venues, bars, and other nooks and crannies. I've had to set up a base of operations at my other "part time job", where I embrace the role of henchman at Buckle Up Studios, located directly outside of Wrigleyville. I do love both of my gigs, however. I mean, who wouldn’t love a job where you get to write about music and look at the beautiful sunrises off of Lake Michigan. All the while my boss, DJ Moxxy, is mixing and tinkering with synthesizers perfecting his sound, building up to a project the puts him in unfamiliar territory. All this time I had a story right under my nose.
Dustin Drenk, aka DJ Moxxy, has been an active DJ for seventeen years, using his wicked awesome scratching techniques to propel himself to paramount status of global admiration. He chose his stage name, Moxxy, because his creed is to push the envelope, forever expanding on the boundaries in sound, always searching for the undiscovered. I can tell you from observing him, that he spends hours in front of a computer tweaking low frequency oscillators to his satisfaction. Aside from being a DJ, Moxxy also more than dabbles in electronic music. Starting off fifteen years ago with just a stripped MPC 2000, a Task AM 4 track, and a car stereo, he has thrived off the few tools he had, standing convicted of being a creative and resourceful individual. Now, he will once again take a new leap in his career. Moxxy only has produced singles that he puts on his website as soon as they pass his production standards, never releasing a colletive of his work in an album setting. It’s one of the moves that makes him a stand out, but he's ready to make a difference and is progressively compiling an album! Finally, a grouping of tracks in a sole location by one of Chicago’s finest DJ’s.
DJ Moxxy is gearing up to go on tour and getting his chops back to rare form. He was kind enough to let me record a smidgen of his practice session. You can also listen and purchase his previously released material at the following links:
