The popular DJ Mister Cee, a longtime presence for New York City's hip hop station Hot 97, has resigned, according to a report from SPIN on Sept. 11, 2013. DJ Mister Cee resigned after 20 years behind the mic amid continuing allegations that he has a bad habit of picking up prostitutes, and that he happens to prefer those of the transgender variety.
DJ Mister Cee is well known for his work and years of service throughout his career, and it is just strange that he would retire due to such a scandal. Some outlets are saying that it is shocking considering the "historically homophobic culture of hip hop."
SPIN reports that things are already getting ugly as Hot 97's rival station Power 105 is putting forth some homophobic remarks. The magazine states:
“After his arrest this year, Charlamange Tha God of rival station Power 105 performed an openly hateful segment in which he repeatedly called Mister Cee a ‘serial purchaser of penis.’ The discussion with his colleagues on Hot 97′s morning show also largely centered on Mister Cee’s sexuality.”
A statement was released by Hot 97 that confirmed DJ Mister Cee's retirement after 20 years with the company. It is believed that he may have been forced out instead of resigning on his own.
“Due to some personal circumstances that have become public, after 20 years of service, Mr Cee has chosen to resign. We feel that this is in the best interest of both HOT 97 and Cee’s personal well-being.”
“While we do not endorse the alleged activities, he is clearly facing a personal dilemma that is for him and only him to comment on. We are saddened by his departure; his contributions here at HOT 97 were great and we know him as a friend, a caring individual and significant hip hop advocate. We wish Mr Cee the best and will always consider him a family member of HOT 97.”
DJ Mister Cee has been a pillar of rap - old school and new - during his Hot 97 midday show. It has now been confirmed that DJ Mister Cee's final show was indeed on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.
MTV confirmed that DJ Mister Cee was indeed arrested last week for public lewdness. The New York Daily News also reported that he was busted back in Oct. and Nov. of 2012 for prostitution loitering.
The DJ did respond to this news via Twitter.
