DJ AM also known as Adam Goldstein (36) was found dead in his apartment around 5:20 PM on Friday in New York City.

TMZ sources say DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days, one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door. The friend called the cops but it was the fire department who finally entered his apartment and found the body.

Prescription pill bottles were found near his body and a glass crack pipe was also found inside the bedroom.

DJ AM is the former boyfriend of Nicole Richie, he also dated singer/actress Mandy Moore. He was originally a member of the band Crazy Town, known for their hit song Butterfly.

DJ AM has been featured on albums for Madonna, Papa Roach and Will Smith.

Just last year in September 2008, DJ AM was seriously injured in a plane crash with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. That crash killed two crew members and two other passengers.

Sources told TMZ that DJ AM had been "completely devastated" over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, Hayley Wood.

The couple split within the last week -- she was the one who called off their relationship.

DJ AM has been sober for nine years, but the sources say the breakup and the stress over the plane crash could have caused him to start using drugs again.
