DIY Recipe for Clarifying Rinse

See also

If you're a person who uses a lot of products in their hair or if you find that your hair is limp, flat and dull in color, perhaps you need to clarify your hair. Clarifying means to remove impurities from something in order to make it easier to see. For the hair, clarifying rinses are used to strip buildup from the hair and scalp, so the hair is clean and full of life again.

Using a clarifying rinse can be harsh on the hair, but if you follow up with a regular shampoo and conditioner, you will balance out the pH of your hair-where it is found most healthy. There are clarifying shampoos on the market that you can use, but since it is not recommended to use the product frequently, making your own will ensure that you are using what you need when you need it.

To make your own clarifying rinse you will need the following:

  • large empty spray bottle
  • 1 cup of lukewarm/warm distilled water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • rosemary essential oil
  • tea tree essential oil
  • plastic cap

Once you have gathered all the items needed, you can get started. Remove the top from the empty spray bottle and add the baking soda. Next add the warm water to help dissolve the powder. Next, add the ACV (apple cider vinegar) followed by the water and lemon juice. Finally, add a few drops each of the rosemary and tea tree oil. (If you don't have rosemary oil, thyme will work as well. Shake contents well to mix the ingredients well.

To use:

  • Spray on the hair from small section to the next until evenly damp but not dripping.
  • Cover the hair with the plastic cap for 20 minutes
  • Next, remove the cap and rinse completely
  • Follow up with your normal shampoo and conditioner

Special Note:

You can also add these ingredients to a sink or basin to see the amount of buildup this recipe removes from your hair. To do: 1. Immerse your hair in the mixture and saturate your hair with it for 5-10 minutes. Massage the mixture into the hair and scalp vigorously to lift any dirt or debris. 2. You should be able to see the buildup from your hair in the water. So you can empty the sink/basin and refill with water 3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 until the water is clear (usually 3-4 cycles)
