DIY Curtain Rod Tricks

What happens when you have lemons? You make lemonade. I did just that recently with my new kitchen window project. So here's what happened...

The kitchen window is 58"W. I bought a rod on clearance at Bed Bath & Beyond for $14.99 + $5 off coupon making it only $9.99...SCORE! Unfortunately, I realized after the fact that it was only a 48"W rod. I needed an additional 10" to fit the window! I just so happened to have a 48"W rod that I had already deemed too short for this project a day or two before (duh!).

What do I do? I wanted the project done that night!

Well, I decided to pull a "McGuyver" on my curtain rods (am I dating myself with that statement?). I took one end of the other 48"W rod and taped it to the other two ends of the new 48" rod. As you can see from the picture, I had my measuring tape extended to 58" and the extension rod is taped in the center with my "all purpose" painter's tape. Once I had the rod installed, the window valance fabric completely covered up my handiwork.

Well worth it because my new project costs were only $28.42!! (2 x Valances at $9.99 + coupon ended up being $7.05 each and the rod also on clearance for $14.99 + coupon was only $9.99 + tax). Buying a longer rod would have easily cost me $30+ tax.

If only I was as good at using coupons in other areas in my life as I am at Bed Bath & Beyond...imagine how much I would save!
