DIY: Child's full apron

These aprons are great for pretend play or helping in the kitchen and can be gender neutral.

Supplies:

  • Fabric
  • double fold bias tape
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Iron and ironing board

Instructions:

Draw the apron shape and cut one out. Be sure to fold it in half length wise to ensure symmetry. Trace it or pin it onto the fabric and cut it out. Sew the double fold bias tape along the top of the apron. Then sew the double fold bias tape on the sides of the apron (start where the waist tie will be), down along the bottom, to the other side, where the waist tie will be. Determine how long the waist tie will be. Sew along the double fold bias tape until that point is reached, then sew the double fold bias tape on the apron, where the waist tie should be and continue along the side of the apron, working your way to the top. Next, determine how long the neck portion of the apron will be. This will be the neck ‘loop’.  Sew the double fold bias tape until that point is reached, then continue sewing the double fold bias tape at the top of the apron where the neck ‘loop’ should attach and continue sewing down the side of the apron. Once the point is reached where the other waist tie should be, stop and sew only the bias tape to an equal length of the first waist tie. Trim the thread and it is done!

Many variations can be done by using coordinating fabrics and ribbon.
