DIY Beaded belts: A must-have wedding accessory

November 17, 2010

Wedding dress sashes and belts have always added an elegant touch to complete bridal looks (and are wonderfully waist-slimming!). Adorned with ribbon, flowers, or beads, the different wedding sash possibilities are endless. However, if you are looking especially to add more sparkle to your wedding dress, think about making your own bejeweled wedding belt.

Glittery, crystal belts are popular on a variety of wedding dress shapes, as you can easily see in many bridal collections. Just look at Chelsea Clinton’s recent wedding dress! Instead of paying for an overpriced belt, create something special by hand-beading a sash or using jewelry. Look at dress pictures for inspiration and recreate designs on your own sash.

Begin with a thick length of satin ribbon—go with white, choose to make a “something blue,” or coordinate your wedding colors.

1. Brooches/Jewelry: Pin brooches or sew strands of crystal necklaces along the length of the ribbon. Using pre-made jewelry takes out the time it takes to individually sew beads or crystals. Using a family brooch or vintage jewelry is a great way to include family mementos or to further the theme of your wedding.

2. Beads: Sew beads onto the satin ribbon. You can do a combination of gluing and sewing, such as the belt shown on Wedding Bee, or you can sew beads in a more orderly design. Keep in mind that this method is more time consuming, but you could end up with a belt that you can treasure and pass down!

Have Fun!
