DIY: 18" doll school uniform

This pattern will fit 18" dolls, such as American Girl dolls.

Supplies:

  • scissors
  • measuring tape
  • fabric matching the girl's school uniform-  20 X 7, 16 X 3, and 4.5 X 5 inches
  • coordinating thread
  • hook and loop, such as Velcro, 3 inches and 4.5 inches
  • sewing machine
  • 5 inches of elastic
  • iron and ironing board

Instructions:

Cut a 20 X 7 inch piece of fabric. With the rights sides together, sew the 7 inch sides together. Hem both ends. Holding the 7 inch seam in one hand, mark the opposite side.

Making the pleats- this can vary depending on the design of the girl's uniform.

This will be the center of the center pleat. Measure 1.5 inches on both sides of the center point and fold small box pleats and pin. Measure 2 inches on both sides of the center pleat and fold a box pleat and pin- do so on both sides. Using a zig zag stitch, sew the 5 inches of elastic, on the wrong side, in at the waistline. It should roughly reach from one side pleat, across the back to the other side pleat. Iron.

Making the bib-

Measure 16 X 3 inches of the uniform fabric, and cut. With right sides together, sew. Turn right side out and iron, with seam falling in the center of the rectangle, no at the sides. Cut it in half so that you will be left with two 8 X 1.5 rectangles. Lay the straps side by side, with right sides up and sew a 3 inch piece of hook and loop across the bottom. Measure a 4.5 X 5 inch piece of uniform fabric and cut. Hem all sides. The end of the straps that does not have the hook and loop, with right sides together, sew to opposite corners of the 4.5 X 5 piece of fabric on the 4.5 inch side. Along the other 4.5 inch side, sew a 4.5 piece of hook and loop. Iron.

Taking the skirt's wrong side, along the center pleat, sew in the 3 inch piece of hook and loop that matches the straps, and sew the 4.5 piece of hook and loop, centered just below the elastic in the back.

The bib will be removable, allowing the uniform to change when the girl's does.

The fabric for the uniform can be from an old uniform the girl has outgrown. All other supplies for this project can be found locally at Joann Fabrics or Handcock.
