Move over engagement party, wedding shower and every other party out there. The new “IT” party, according to the New York Post on Sept. 4 is the divorce party or divorce weekend, whichever term you prefer. It’s all happening at the Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa, a luxury hotel in upstate New York.
The upscale resort, famous for its lavish weddings, will now be hosting “Divorce Hotel,” a business promising an almost stress-free divorce in a peaceful setting. Does that sound like a reality TV show to you? If it does, that’s because it is. Clients are free to participate, but it’s not mandatory for the $5,000 weekend.
Basically, the divorcing parties are housed in separate accommodations while a mediator attempts to finalize a signed divorce agreement. That agreement then goes to a Judge for the formalizing legalities. The parties can take advantage of golf, hiking, swimming, spa luxuries and other hotel amenities during the mediations
Program founder Jim Halfens told The Post, “Practically, they are divorced after signing on Sunday.” Halfens has founded services like this in his native Holland.
Yes, there are some rules other than paying the five grand fee. You must be a U.S. citizen and you must agree to use the provided mediators and attorneys to facilitate your divorce.
What does the hotel think about adding the divorce package to its wedding fame? They’re not too worried. Rob Sgarlata, a hotel representative, stated, “They want people to get into an environment that minimizes the stress of the situation and that’s exactly what we offer.” He added, “We welcome all kinds of guests.”
Services are scheduled to begin by the end of September at the Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa. If you are interested, book now by calling 866-892-1171.
