Strange things were happening around the Wolcott Lilac Gardens house. Inexplicable events were fairly common around the elegant century old home. It was that Halloween time of year when darkness comes earlier, and leaves rustling make a person wonder if that‘s what she really heard.
The Lilac Gardens house was an elegant beauty still holding her grace at one hundred fifty years old. A fourth of an acre of lilac trees occupied most of the surrounding grounds - a true luxury in a burgeoning college town. Some species were so rare, that none of the botanists from the university were able to identify them. But the grand dame of a house held a mystery that surrounded more than the elegant gardens.
Now a joint residence for college students, each of the five bedrooms was large. The master bedroom had a large balcony overlooking the gardens. On a summer night, the air was absolutely dreamy with floral scents.
Four different President’s had visited there. A servant’s staircase that facilitated breakfast service to the upstairs rooms made mysteriously creaking sounds. At night there were sounds of footsteps going up and down the narrow stairwell .
Cara became a resident of Lilac Gardens while she pursued her Fine Arts studies. She occupied the front bedroom facing north where a view of Masonic Temple was visible. A tall black wrought iron fence bordered a lot full of tall trees that added to the overall mystery of the place.
The first week after she moved in and situated her room, Cara began having strange visions and dreams.
An overall feeling of some kind of mysterious presence permeated this north side of the house. Sometimes the dreams were of ancient mythological symbols. Spaces in time were devoid of any separation between the dream world and reality. There were moments in the night that she wasn't sure whether she saw an apparition in the darkness, or if her imagination created a blurry dark form that appeared at her bedside. The woman she saw was tall and matronly. Her dress was navy colored with small white flowers and pearl buttons following a lace border. She imagined she saw the deceased Mrs. Wolcott who had passed away a half a century before .
Later, in the height of her classical studies, Cara began receiving cryptic messages that resulted in automatic handwriting. Some of the messages were unintelligible, but one that rang clear and true confirmed the Underground Railroad that Mrs. Wolcott had accommodated back in her time.
Cara shared the Underground Railroad theory with the other residents and the content of the esoteric handwriting. No one really had much to say. They were in awe as much as she was; even though they had witnessed her hand awkwardly scrawling text across page after page.
One of the more tangible messages had described a tunnel between the Wolcott house, and the Masonic Temple. Barbara, another resident/friend, decided to call upon an expert in divining rods. Mr. Shuler would be there in about a week.
Many were invited to attend this event. The Lilac Gardens sun-room filled up and the crowd spilled over into the adjacent dining room situated behind glass panes of the French doors. Elderly Mr. Shuler had his hands full with this large group.
After the divining rod demonstration, all went outside at dusk, and watched Mr. Schuler’s divining rods trace the underground tunnel. It was exactly where Cara had described.
Was Mr. Shuler authentic? He had created a divining tool of metal with a rotating L shaped tuning arm set on ball bearings. Folklore has it that only certain people have the ability for divination, but his instrument worked for everyone. All got the same indications as Mr. Shuler’s invention traced out a variety of energy patterns. The divining rod indicated a tunnel from the back of the Lilac Gardens house leading in the direction of the Mason building.
Shuler could not stay very long. The remaining mysteries were not his concern. He had shown everyone the magic of the divining rod, and the location of the underground tunnel. The quest was theirs from that point on.
