Diversity and Inclusion: Creating a diverse workplace environment.

Workplace diversity and inclusion is about participation based on equality, working relationships, and shared values. A diverse workplace environment also has a direct link to the success of a business bottom line. Some people would say diversity is the focus of quotas, such as affirmative actions for minority and female firms; however, it is extended to many other areas such as sexual preferences, demographics or geographical locations, and military, and disability status. There are community activists that have a strong compassion about these diversity and inclusion programs for minority owned small businesses that draws attention to government officials to challenge the authenticity of their diversity programs to ensure that these programs are doing what the programs were created to do for the financially disadvantaged business owner.

Diversity programs reduce social isolation that enables people to recognize differences in cultures breaking the barriers of discrimination in the workplace and business environment. Norman Edwards, president of the American Center for Economic Equality is a strong advocate of diversity and inclusion who actively monitors local projects to make sure there is minority participation financed with government funding. Edwards seeks justice for every minority and female contractor seeking inclusion on local projects. Diversity can also extend to communication preferences and personalities of employees in the workplace. Human resource managers can train management to be responsible to embrace diversity through written policies and programs demonstrating the importance of equal employment opportunity focusing on respect and fairness of all whether in business dealings or employment opportunities.

Bias and hostile workplace environment are not the thing of the past. There is still work to do in enforcing workplace policies and standards within the organization. Diversity programs should be standard within businesses as well as the municipalities. Management should display responsible communication focusing on showing respect and fairness in hiring practices, managing, displaying, and communicating the importance of diversity in the workplace making it a productive and inclusive work environment. Diversity and inclusion is relevant to successful business strategies that increase quality performance, better productivity, and customer satisfaction.
