‘Divergent’ to start filming in Chicago this April

Based on the sci-fi book of the same name, ‘Divergent’ will begin filming in Chicago this April.

‘Divergent’ is the first installment of a trilogy series written by local author Veronica Roth.

It’s the story of a teenager who desperately wants to break free from a society that divides people based on human virtues. These five factions are Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). According to the story, every 16-year-old must select which faction they will devote to the rest of their life. The story follows young Beatrice Prior as she struggles in this dystopian society. Her burdens are further challenged by a secret she harbors and a new romance she discovers. When she leaves her faction and joins a rival group, she has to make some fateful decisions.

Set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago, the ‘Divergent’ movie will film entirely in the Chicago area.

On Monday, January 14, Governor Quinn announced the movie adaptation is expected to bring in 1,000 jobs and more than $30 million in local spending.

“Illinois is an ideal place for filmmakers with our skilled workforce, iconic shooting locations and one of the largest soundstages in the country,” Quinn said.

Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) wrote the screenplay and Neil Burger (Limitless) is the film’s director.

The motion picture has cast Shailene Woodley, best known for her role in The Descendants alongside George Clooney. Woodley will play 16-year-old Beatrice “Tris” Prior. Additional casting roles are still in the works and yet to be determined.

Hoping to attract the same fans as the ‘Twilight’ series and ‘Hunger Games’ this trilogy looks promising. A noted winner of Goodreads Choice Award for Favorite Book of 2011 and for Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction (2011), ‘Divergent’ is a New York Times Bestseller.

Publishers Weekly called Roth’s debut novel, “A memorable, unpredictable journey from which it is nearly impossible to turn away.”

Veronica Roth, 24, began writing ‘Divergent’ while still attending college. Book two of the trilogy, ‘Insurgent’ is currently available wherever books are sold. Rolling Stone calls it, “The next big thing.”

Roth is currently working on the third installment in the series. Yet to be titled, book three is scheduled for release sometime in the fall.

The ‘Divergent’ movie is scheduled to be released in March 2014.
