'Divergent' sequel 'Insurgent' set for 2015 release

On Friday, March 21 broke the news that the impressive box office results from early screenings of the highly anticipated book to screen movie "Divergent" has caused Summit Entertainment to green light the sequel "Insurgent." The film is expected to arrive in theaters in March 2015. The script is being developed by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

The films are based on the book trilogy by author Veronica Roth, and feature a futuristic Chicago were everyone is divided into factions based on virtues in order to avoid major conflicts and war. The heroine Beatrice "Tris" Prior changes factions from being selfless to brave, and discovers she is not like everyone else and doesn't fit into one faction.

"Divergent" is currently on track to bring in over sixty million dollars at the box office for its opening weekend, which will make it one of the biggest movies of 2014. The film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Tony Goldwyn, Zoe Kravitz, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, and Kate Winslet.

The second film follows the events of the second book, which picks up just minutes after the conclusion of "Divergent." The film will be directed by Robert Schwentke, which is a change since Neil Burger directed the first film. "Insurgent" is tentatively scheduled for release on March 20, 2015. The third book in the young adult series, "Allegiant," is expected to be adapted for the screen with a scheduled release date on March 2016.
