'Divergent' is No. 1 at U.S. box office; 'Muppets Most Wanted' is No. 2

Summit Entertainment's "Divergent" debuted No. 1 at the U.S. and Canadian box office for the weekend ending March 23, 2014. According to a Box Office Mojo report published on March 23, the sci-fi/action-adventure film "Divergent" (starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet) had $56 million in ticket sales for the weekend ending March 23, 2014.

One other movie opened in wide release in the U.S. and Canada on March 21, 2014: Walt Disney Pictures' "Muppets Most Wanted" (starring Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell) debuted at No. 2, with $16.5 million in ticket sales. The movie is one of several "Muppets" feature films that have been released over the years.

According to Box Office Mojo, here are the Top 5 movies in the U.S. and Canada for the weekend ending March 23, 2014:

1. "Divergent" — $21.2 million

2. "Muppets Most Wanted" — $16.5 million

3. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" — $11.7 million

4. "300: Rise of an Empire" — $8.7 million

5. "God's Not Dead" — $8.6 million

Also noteworthy: Freestyle Releasing's "God's Not Dead" (a Christian drama) debuted at No. 5, with an impressive $8.6 million in ticket sales from just 780 locations in the U.S. and Canada
