Dive into Jumbo's Shrimp & Seafood in Crown Point, Ind.

When Ron and Kerri Seljan say they serve jumbo shrimp at Jumbo's Shrimp & Seafood in Crown Point, Ind., they're not kidding. These size U-15 babies (that means there are 15 shrimp to a pound) are shelled, deveined, lightly breaded and deep fried to a golden turn. The whole process starts once you place your order, either in person or on the phone. The product is never pre-breaded or pre-fried and waiting under a heat lamp for a gullible customer. Cooking on a to-order basis (the French call it à la minute) means you're getting the freshest, hot-from-the-frying oil product available. They're worth every penny of their $9.99 half-pound price.

But jumbo shrimp are just the tip of the iceberg at this cozy diner. Swimming with the more mundane hot dogs, corn dogs, jalapeno poppers, chicken breast sandwiches and chicken strips are blue gill, frog legs, crab cakes, popcorn shrimp the size of your thumb and fish chips the size of a child's hand. But their three most-popular offerings are jumbo shrimp, blue gill and lake perch. Don't forget to try the macaroni salad made inhouse.

In the restaurant business since 1990, Ron Seljan opened Jumbo's Shrimp & Seafood in 2004 and has created a loyal following. Recent customers Allen, Diane and Andrew Williams say they keep coming back not only because the food is good, but because they're treated like family. I can attest to that on both counts!
