Fla. resident Pedro Maldonado Sr., 53, killed his 47-year-old wife, Monica, and his 17-year-old son, Pedro, with a crossbow in their Miami-area home on Monday, and then drove hundreds of miles north to Tallahassee where he attempted to kill another son with the same crossbow.
By Wednesday, Dec. 4, the disturbed dad was found dead in a Lake City, Fla. motel room about 100 miles east of Tallahassee, where he died from slitting his own throat, according to The Huffington Post.
While on his murderous rampage, Maldonado was using a "hand-held crossbow that shoots small arrows,” according to a statement released by the Broward County Sheriff's Office,
After Maldonado killed his wife and 17-year-old son last Monday, he caught up with his other son, 21-year-old Jose – a Florida State University student - the next morning.
Maldonado shot an arrow from the crossbow at his remaining son.
"He tried to shoot him with the small crossbow, but Jose turned, and the arrow hit his ear," the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
"Then his father began to choke him, but Jose struggled and managed to get away from his dad, who fled."
Police began searching for Maldonado on Tuesday after receiving a tip from one of Maldonado’s friends who said that Maldonado had confessed to him about the killings.
By the time authorities tracked Maldonado down to that hotel room in Lake City, he had already taken his own life.
Police say that Pedro Maldonado may have been worried about his family’s financial situation and that he may have suffered a recent business loss. The family’s visas had all expired, “opening the possibility of deportation to Ecuador, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.”
