Compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs last about ten times as long as incandescent light bulbs and pay for themselves in about six months. With energy savings of about $30 over the life of a CFL, many of us are making the switch.
Because CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, consumers should store them in a crush-proof container after the bulbs burn out and you can dispose of them properly. In Sioux Falls, you can dispose of CFLs at the following locations:
Ace Hardware
– 41st & Minnesota
– 12th & Kiwanis
– 10th & Sycamore
– 41st & Seretoma
Home Depot
2523 S Louise Avenue
Safety-Kleen Corporate Systems
2000 N. Westport Avenue
Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility
(for residents of Lake, Lincoln, Mccook, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties only)
1015 East Chambers Street

Manufacturers of ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs are required to offer at least a two-year limited warranty (covering manufacturer defects) for CFLs used in homes. If a CFL burns out before it should, look at the CFL base to find the manufacturer’s name; then, go to manufacturer’s website to find the customer service information. You may want to save your sales receipts for documenting the purchase dates of CFLs to obtain refunds or replacements.

This is such a good article! I use the ones from Walmart, and they are pretty good. The ones I have don't emit the coolish light--they are nice and warm. Thanks, Penny!
I was amazed at the savings on the electric bill when I changed to these lights. I'll never go back to the old style. Thanks for the reminder about saving the receipts, once in a great while, you do get a defective one.
I wonder if every Ace Hardware store takes the used bulbs. Thanks for the info.
Great article with excellent information to share with us. Thank you!
