On July 17, Disneyland Resort celebrated its 59th anniversary with a celebration that both looked back at its past and ahead to its milestone anniversary. As part of today’s festivities, Disneyland announced it will celebrate a yearlong celebration to mark its 60th anniversary.
Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration will begin in spring of 2015.
Disneyland's 59th anniversary celebration began this morning with a Dapper Dans sing-along that featured some of the park’s classic music. 59 Disney characters then joined the Main Street, U.S.A. festivities. They, along with guests, listened to Walt Disney’s opening day welcome speech. Together, characters and guests sang “Happy Birthday” to the “Happiest Place on Earth.” The celebration also included, as has become something of a tradition with such events, special cupcakes that guests may buy.
Disneyland also formally announced its upcoming Diamond Celebration, revealing the anniversary’s logo. The logo depicts Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle as a collection of diamonds as towers and turrets. One diamond, representing a turret, has the number “60” in blue. The words ”Disneyland Resort and Diamond Celebration,” in the same icy-blue colors as the number, form the castle’s base.
“It’s an incredible time at the Disneyland Resort as we prepare for next year’s Diamond Celebration,” said Michael Colglazier, president of Disneyland Resort, said in a press statement. “We’re excited to honor our rich history, to celebrate the incredible magic that fills our resort today, and to create unforgettable memories with our guests for many years to come.”
Disney also announced the social-media campaign that will promote the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. It is a contest that invites guests to share their memories of the park using personal photos taken some time during the park's six decades. Those who enter will have the chance to win a Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration prize or the grand prize: a trip to Disneyland Resort to participate in the kickoff of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration.
To enter the Disneyland 60 Years contest, guests may share their photos using Twitter or Instagram and the hashtag #Disneyland60Contest. Disney Parks Blog will then select the top five photos from each decade; blog readers will vote for the winners, from among these five, in each decade. Interested readers should visit the Disney Parks Blog for complete rules.
Today’s Diamond Celebration announcement did not include the release of major information as to whether any special events or new additions to the park are being planned. Disneyland also did not provide an official start date for the celebration.
The lack of major announcements surprised some fans who'd expected more information, in part because Disney Parks Blog had organized a special meet-up promising attending guests a “sneak peek” into next year’s celebration. The unofficial Disney fan site MiceChat had leaked information just a few days ago, claiming Disneyland Resort decided not to make any big announcements about Disneyland’s 60th anniversary plans on July 17.
