Disney World raises prices: Why did Disney World raise the price to $99 now?

Disney World raised prices again starting Feb. 23, 2014. The park's price increase to $99 for a one-day ticket applies to Magic Kingdom visitors ages 10 and up. Walt Disney World Resort is the most expensive theme park. Universal and SeaWorld Orlando charge $92 for basic one-day tickets. According to a Feb. 24, 2014, CNN report, Walt Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty commented on the price change.

“Our pricing reflects the high quality and breadth of experiences we offer and our ongoing commitment to investing in our parks. We offer a variety of ticket options that provide a great value, and find that most guests select multi-day tickets that offer additional savings."

Disney World raised its price just last year to $95. This year it is $99. A price increase of $4 also applies to Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios which changed from $90 to $94, just a few dollars less.

Many Walt Disney park visitors do choose multi-day tickets, especially since the cost of one-day tickets for just one park is continuing to go up. And the push for buying multi-day tickets might just be directly related to the latest price increase which comes earlier this year, even before the summer frenzy is starting.

The Orlando Sentinel reports on Feb. 25 that by raising prices now and by pushing multi-day tickets, “Disney may be hoping to maximize any spillover business it gets from Universal” which is preparing "to open a second Potter-themed land by this summer: the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley" at Universal Studios Florida. The Universal project is anchored by a ride called "Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.”

According to Deb Willis, editor-in-chief of AllEars.net, an unofficial Disney planning and fan site, Walt Disney Resort can afford increasing its prices because “attendance is going up, not down; so as long as people keep paying the prices, Disney (any business) will keep raising them."

While the Disney World price increase of $4 might not mean too much of an additional expense for many Magic Kingdom visitors, it is making quite a difference for Walt Disney Co. The company reported a revenue of $12.3 billion for the quarter ending December 28, 2013, “a 9% increase from the same quarter in 2012.” With billions of dollars in revenue each year, maybe “Disney’s Magic Your Way” should say “Disney’s Magic Our Way.”
