This is no ordinary 'Fantasia.' Uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is taking a classic piece of Disneyana and giving it the summer blockbuster touch with 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice.' Summer wouldn't be summer without a Jerry Bruckheimer epic or two. Sure, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" stalled a bit. Still, chances are the eye-candy of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" will play a role in sustaining Disney's mojo at the box office after the one-two punch of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Toy Story 3."
Bruckheimer, star Nicolas Cage and director Jon Turtletaub have done quite well for the Mouse House with their "National Treasure" films. Next month, they all return with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Taking their cure from Walt Disney's groundbreaking animation masterpiece, "Fantasia," Turtletaub has conjured up a live-action megapic that pulls out all the hardware from the Bruckheimer arsenal of B-I-G popcorn entertainment.
Now, Disney has posted online one of the iconic scenes from "Fantasia" that has made the journey into "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," the famed mop sequence. Introduced by Cage and co-stsar Jay Baruchel, watch the clever interpretation in the video clip below.
Disney is banking on the power of nostalgia and 21st century filmmaking to turn "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" into one of the summer's must-see events. Will it cast a formidable box office spell on audiences? Find out when the film enters theaters citywide on July 14.
