Saturday May 15, 2010, Disney's Lion King celebrated one year on the Las Vegas Strip. A year ago, the 13 year old Broadway production opened the curtain at Mandalay Bay for the very first time.

To celebrate the event, Mandalay Bay Chef Vincent Pilon baked the cast a cake fit for a king. Thom Sesna, who plays the nefarious Uncle Scar, Kissy Simmons, Nala, Derrick Williams, who portrays Mufasa and Buyi Zama, who brings Rafiki to life, posed for Getty Images camera to commemorate the date.

In its run on Broadway, The Lion King has garnered multiple Tony Awards and the performances at Mandalay Bay have entertained parents and children alike. Kids of all ages are familiar with the Elton John/Tim Rice songs from the movie and the 3 brand new songs penned exclusively for the stage.

Bringing in the Lion King to Mandalay Bay was a gamble for the casino in a time when Vegas is moving away from the family focused entertainment shows and attractions of the mid 90's to the risque adult show of the  2000's and "Old Vegas."

Congratulations, Lion King and Mandalay Bay. You may purchase tickets to the show here
