Disney's 'Frozen' tops $1 billion worldwide at box office

You read that right. It was announced Monday that Disney's smash hit animated feature Frozen has crossed the $1 billion threshold in global ticket sales, punching its ticket for an exclusive club in the process.

The film reached the big milestone over the weekend, bringing its total gross to $1,000,256,783, according to Box Office Mojo. That figure makes it the most successful non-sequel film ever and the second-highest grossing animated film of all time behind 2010's Oscar-nominated Toy Story 3, which grossed $1.06 billion. Frozen cost around $150 million total for both production and marketing.

It also joins 17 other films with the distinction of reaching the $1 billion mark, coming in at No. 18 on the all-time worldwide box office list.

Naturally, Frozen is also wildly successful when it comes to Disney alone. It is officially the company's highest-grossing animated film ever, bumping off The Lion King, which held the top spot for two decades. The most recent animated movie before Frozen to rank in Disney's top 10, Tangled (2010), finished its theatrical run with a $591.8 million worldwide gross.

As CBS News points out, it is also likely to get an extra boost in sales following Frozen's Academy Award wins for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature on Sunday night. The film's total earnings don't even include Japan, where it will open on March 14 to complete its full international release.

Since its release in November, Frozen has accumulated a $388 million domestic gross and has managed to stay in the top 10 every single week. It currently ranks eighth behind Pompeii with $3.6 million in earnings for the past week.

Disney CEO Bob Iger calls the film "my proudest moment as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company" and says a stage version and possible sequel are in the works, but no timeline has been set as of yet.
