Disney releases 'The Lone Ranger,' 'Oz the Great and Powerful' Super Bowl teases

Disney announced Tuesday that its 90-second trailer for the forthcoming motion picture “The Lone Ranger”—due in July—will air during the Super Bowl pregame show on CBS this Sunday.

The studio also released a 21-second tease of the commercial.

In other words, a trailer of a trailer.

Disney also announced it will hold a promotional sweepstakes based on the 90-second commercial that will include prizes from Subway and Kawasaki.

To enter the sweepstakes, viewers must answer questions correctly about “The Lone Ranger” commercial. Prizes will be dispersed in pairs, one each for “You and Your Kemosabe.”

“The Lone Ranger” is the highly-anticipated movie from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski that stars Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the title character.

Oz

Disney also released a 12-second tease of its “Oz the Great and Powerful” Super Bowl ad on Monday.

This commercial will air during the Super Bowl game on Sunday, which pits the San Francisco 49ers against the Baltimore Ravens.

“Oz the Great and the Powerful” stars James Franco and Rachel Weisz and is slated for a March 13 release.

Personal Take

What’s the marketing world come to?

A trailer for a trailer? Puh-leeze!

Thing is, the public at large will eat it up, which is why Disney—and several others—are providing “peeks” at this year’s Super Bowl ads in the first place.

Imagine that. A commercial to entice you to tune in to a commercial! Oh, and maybe watch some football while you’re at it!

As idiotic as that sounds, it’s proven to be pure gold to a myriad of advertisers, including snack chips and major motion pictures.
