While the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods was announced more than several months ago, there was only mere internet speculation on who would take on bringing the famous fairytale characters to life until now. Disney released a full cast announcement this morning, with several of the rumors being true and others being wonderful surprises. It will be interesting to see how some of these actors pan out in the roles, as several of them have no famed musical experience or have disappointed audiences before. Of course, the most intriguing thing is not the cast, but how family-oriented company Disney will be adapting the show, which has a less than child-friendly moment in the woods with a baker's wife and a prince. Here's a list of the role announcements, featuring both film and Broadway stars. Do you agree with the choices?
THE WITCH will be played by Meryl Streep, who has been rumored for the part since the beginning. Although the acting will no doubt be phenomenal, it is interesting that they chose Streep for the iconic stage role, considering her singing in Mamma Mia was less than desired.
THE WOLF will be played by Johnny Depp, who previously sung in Tim Burton's film adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
CINDERELLA will be played by Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick, who was the lead in musical movie PITCH PERFECT last year.
RAPUNZEL will be played by MacKenzie Mauzy. The actress is known for her role in Broadway's Next to Normal.
THE BAKERS WIFE will be portrayed by English film actress Emily Blunt. Many people are bashing Blunt's abilities due to a viral video of her drunkenly doing karaoke, but search "Papa" on youtube and you will hear Blunt has an incredible voice. It was a surprise to see her on the list, but may be one of the most intriguing castings in the announcement. This news comes right after the actress' announcement last week that she and her husband are expecting their first child.
THE BAKER will be played by Broadway veteran and Tony winner James Corden.
CINDERELLA'S PRINCE was also surprising when it was announced a few weeks ago, as the part will be played by Star Trek star Chris Pine.
RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE will be played by "Boardwalk Empire" actor Billy Magnussen, who just completed a role in Tony-acclaimed Broadway play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD will be portrayed by young actress Lilla Crawford, who played Annie in the 2013 Broadway revival of the famed musical.
JACK will be played by Daniel Huttlestone, who is recognizable as Gavroche in Tom Hooper's oscar-winning film adaption of Les Miserables last Christmas.
JACK'S MOTHER also gets an interesting casting choice in the form of 80s singer Tracey Ullman. While Ullman clearly can carry a tune, it is the least exciting revelation in the list.
STEPMOTHER is going to be played by actress Christine Baranski, who has been in several film adaptation of musical before this including MAMMA MIA and CHICAGO. The actress is an excellent choice for the role.
THE EVIL STEPSISTERS will be played by Blue Jasmine actress Tammy Blanchard and the wickedly funny Lucy Punch.
THE STEWARD will be played by Richard Glover
THE BAKER'S FATHER will be played by Simon Russell Beale
CINDERELLA'S MOTHER will be played by stage actress Joanna Riding
THE GIANT will be played by famed female actress Frances De La Tour
Into The Woods will be released in theaters Christmas 2014. It will include songs from the original 1987 production, as well as new numbers that Sondheim wrote specifically for the film.
