Disney rejects Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' remake

Walt Disney Studios has turned down the remake of "Yellow Submarine," the planned modern version combining live action and animation like Zemeckis' remake of "A Christmas Carol" and the recently opened "Mars Needs Moms." The movie could still be done by another studio.

Glenn Lovell, instructor of film studies at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA., and author "Escape Artist: The Life and Films of John Sturges," published by University of Wisconsin Press, says remakes are a tricky business.

"Great movies -- such as 'Citizen Kane,' 'The Searchers,' 'The Great Escape' and 'The Wizard of Oz' -- are sacrosanct and shouldn't be messed with. Gus van Sant learned this lesson the hard way when he attempted an update of Hitchcock's 'Psycho,' arguably the greatest film of all time. Van Sant's contribution: change $40,000 in embezzled money to $400,000 and film the shower murder in color."

"Yellow Submarine" wouldn't have been Zemeckis' first movie involving the Beatles. He was co-writer and director for "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," the 1978 film about the Beatles and their fans in New York during the days of Beatlemania in 1964. The film's executive producer was Steven Spielberg.
