Reuters is reporting that Walt Disney Corporation plans to lay off employees in 2013.The layoffs are expected to impact the studio, consumer products, and animation divisions. In 2012, Disney eliminated about 200 workers in their interactive division, and eliminated about 200 staffing positions.
Disney representatives would not comment on the number of workers who may be impacted.
Chicagoans viewed the layoff announcement as potentially as “damaging” on a number of fronts. Said one Chicago business professional:
“Seeing resumes with Disney experience on them is a huge plus in my book. It means that they have worked for a company that understands the intricacies of customer service. Most of us (small businesses) are afraid of hiring the wrong candidate; a PR (public relations) nightmare. Disney candidates provide a sense of relief.”
One potential new grad viewed the news as “career altering.”
“The resume of tomorrow will require some form of internship as a way of proving that you get it. My love is animation, and Disney was (going to be) my chosen vessel to provide that ground level experience. Even though the layoffs are focusing on duplicative resources; it still means one less job; one less opportunity.”
When asked how to get hired by a company that is down-sizing, one career coach offered the following advice:
“I don’t know that much really changes. The key to getting hired begins by having a resume compelling enough to make them (a company) want to call you. In order to do that, you must have something on your resume worth talking about. If you have some customer service experience, a letter of recommendation from a business manager or owner, some volunteer experience and a professional Facebook page; you will attract a hiring manager.”
