'Disney Infinity' delayed to capitalize on peak shopping season

Disney Interactive announced late Wednesday night that it has delayed the release of Disney Infinity for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS by two months. The release of the Skylanders challenger will now be August 18 according to Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants.

Disney Infinity was originally scheduled to be released in June which is typically a dead period for new game releases. Disney Interactive pushed the release back to take advantage of the busier shopping season that leads up to the holidays. Mr. Pleasants told the New York Times that the delay came after feedback from retailers who sought a release closer to to the holiday shopping season.

The game borrows the Skylanders toy-based game modal but features characters from various Disney films. The Disney Infinity Starter Pack will come with three characters from Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles for $75. Additional characters and playsets from even more Disney franchises can be purchased and unlocked in the game using the Infinity Base, which is the equivalent of the Skylanders Portal of Power.

There are currently 27 known playable characters in Disney Infinity from eight different franchises including Cars, Wreck-It-Ralph, Phineas and Ferb, Toy Story, The Nightmare Before Christmas plus the three franchise mentioned above.
