The Disney Channel hit show, ‘Jessie’ is delving into the world of romance for its’ age 6-14 year old demographic. In the last four episodes that will wrap the season, airing this fall, the main character, Jesse, will get engaged to her love interest. Since Jessie is an adult, that the story line is a great for kids to understand the adult world on their level.
Disney is often mocked for writing children’s shows that make adults look like children, compared to the people supposedly being “parented.” The network has also brought in many more topics for children to be exposed to. The idea of having “boyfriends” and “girlfriends” is represented across many shows, without hiding the fact that adolescents are often crazy for the opposite sex. One show even introduced a gay character.
While tackling a topic like getting engaged is a little heavy for the viewers, it will undoubtedly be handled in an innocent Disney fashion. Jessie and her love interest will be seen picnicking in the park, and going on movie dates. On second thought, maybe adults should watch this too. It could complicate real life a little less. Debby Ryan, who plays Jessie, will turn 21 in a few weeks and is dating 21 year old Pilots musician, Josh Dun. According to Yahoo, the couple says that although they are young, being engaged isn’t uncommon in their age group, as they have had five sets of friends get engaged over the past year. Is Disney handling topics too deep for children, or is the network simply, “with the times”?
