On April 24, Disney formally announced some welcome news for Muppet fans. A sequel to 2011’s “The Muppets” is in the works. The movie will star Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, among other familiar felt faces.
Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, confirmed the sequel at CinemaCon 2012, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners being held in Las Vegas.
Bailey acknowledged information about the Muppets sequel has been circulating in the media – thanks in part to recent interviews with screenwriter Nicholas Stoller. But the CinemaCon presentation ensured the official announcement was memorable, thanks to the presence of Kermit and Miss Piggy.

Kermit and Miss Piggy appeared at CinemaCon to promote two upcoming Disney films: “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto, and “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” starring James Franco.
James Bobin, who helmed “The Muppets,” returns to direct the sequel and is co-writing the screenplay with Stoller.
Stoller has indicated the sequel is envisioned as a comedy caper, and that Walter will appear in the movie.
Jason Segel, who starred in and co-wrote “The Muppets” with Stoller, has stated he will not appear in the Muppets sequel.
A release date for “The Muppets 2” has not been announced.
