Disney layoffs will impact 175 jobs, or two percent of the ABC network's 7,600 staff beginning Wed. On Aug. 21, Deadline reports that the he majority of layoff will be focused on network operations, including broadcast delivery systems, and eight of the ABC Owned Stations. Some daytime programming and marketing will also be affected.
The Disney-ABC job cuts are part of placing more priority on distribution. Additionally, priority will entail new Watch ABC live streaming and adding new positions requiring different digital skills than those laid off.
“As technological advances continue to alter the competitive landscape and viewer habits, it’s incumbent upon us to stay ahead of the curve,” Disney said in a statement. “To that end, we’ve undergone a review of our organizational structures and processes, and have re-imagined and realigned certain areas and functions to gain efficiencies and better position us for future growth.”
The Disney company has in the process of staff reductions in multiple divisions. Layoff with the movie studio, consumer products, and ESPN staff have suffered job cuts. A few years ago, the Disney-ABC TV Group laid off about 400 staffers in ABC News.
