The original Disgaea (Hour of Darkness) for the PS2 was one of the greatest RPGs on the system. Disgaea celebrated its ten-year anniversary on August 27 (originally released in 2003). The developer, Nippon Ichi, or NIS America over here, celebrates its 20th anniversary from opening shop in 1993. Since Disgaea’s first adventure, Nippon Ichi has made three sequels in the franchise as well as various spin-offs. But now they’re going back to the original that started it all and like Final Fantasy X, they’re making their first direct sequel. It’s called Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness!
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness sees Laharl reaching his full potential as Overlord of the Netherworld. But, like before, the other demons still don’t respect him, so Laharl sets off once again to gain knowledge, respect, and even greater power. Plus, apparently, Laharl will meet his sister. It sounds like a typical, whacky Disgaea adventure.
While the other sequels and spin-offs were enjoyable, there was something missing. The cast of the first Disgaea was so enticing and unforgettable that no one can come close to reaching Laharl, or Etna’s charm. Plus the concept and gameplay was so original at the time. Sure, D2 may still not be as original since there have been so many sequels, but hopefully it can recapture some nostalgic love. For now, enjoy these new screenshots (released today) and look forward to Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness' release on October 8 for the PS3.
