As is being reported today, February 20, 2014 in the USA Today, there is a new disease striking many Americans. This disease is becoming quite common and everyone is a possible candidate to get it. This new disease is called... sitting!
A recent study from the esteemed Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, has concluded that the older you get, the more you sit, and the more you sit, the greater your chances of diminishing health. According to the study, two-thirds of the time you used to spend walking, as you get older you spend that time sitting.
So, a logical mind might be wondering, why would sitting be considered a "disease?" According to the author of this new study, Dorothy Dunlop, Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, being sedentary (sitting), can greatly increase the following:
- Risk of heart attack
- Type 2 diabetes
- Death from Cancer
- Heart disease
Aside from the above mentioned physical conditions, the lack of physical movement can also affect your mental health, this leading to drastic mood changes, lack of creativity and various conditions dealing with anxiety. Changing your lifestyle in this respect, according to the study, can increase your lifespan by at least two years.
So, what can we conclude from this new study of this new disease? Get off your butt and enjoy life!
