While the title may suggest a teenage drama set in high school, "Hellcats" actually focuses on the trials and tribulations of a young college girl who turns to competitive cheerleading when her college scholarship falls through. Starring Alyson Michalka as Marti Perkins, a pre-law college student with an initial disdain of those participating in competitive cheerleading, the series offers a look at challenging first impressions and finding friends in the most unexpected of places.
The series also co-stars Gail O’Grady as Marti's mom, Matt Barr as Marti's best friend Dan, and Ashley Tisdale as Savannah, a cheerleader who helps introduce Marti to the Hellcats' world. Also, while not introduced in the first episode, the series will feature Gale Harold, Aaron Douglas, and D.B. Woodside.
"Hellcats" invokes the same spirit as the "Bring It On" films while adding the pressures of college life -- whether it be paying for a high-priced education, balancing the demands of college classes and schedules, meeting parental expectations, and learning that friendships must grow and evolve or be left behind. College can be the best of times and the worst of times, but in the end it melds everyone into the person they will be the rest of their lives.
Marti will learn if she is meant to pursue a law degree or if she has another calling. She will also confront her fears of the dreams she gave up and perhaps learn to dream of a new future; and along the way, her adventures in competitive cheerleading will help her forge new friendships.
