Tourism websites are a wonderful resource when planning a vacation. Surprisingly, they are also a wonderful resource when planning your genealogical research trips. Discover Ohio, a website maintained by the Ohio Division of Tourism, may not be your every-day search engine for researchers but should be added to the list.
By searching by the term “genealogy,” one can find a handful of wonderful resources to explore throughout Ohio such as local historical sites that contain family history resources, libraries and archives with interesting collections, and more. Cultural events and festivals, such as those including genealogists performing Irish and Scottish research, can also be located. However, the fun starts when you search using the terms such as “family history.” Though some results won’t be helpful you will find a mountain of unexpected gems.
Some of these finds include:
- The Abberley House Irish Bed & Breakfast located east of Columbus offers 25% discount to those researching their family trees.
- The Lundy Family Collection at the Quaker Heritage Museum offers a look at the life and society of a typical Quaker family in Ohio.
- A Civil War Train itinerary shows stops throughout the state that may match the journey of a Civil War-era ancestor or two on your family tree.
- Experience Ohio highlights the trips, experiences, and photographs of others who have traveled our state for fun and research. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to share our journeys with others who would like to do the same type of travel?
- The Cultural Tour of Holmes County Ohio itinerary helps those with Amish ancestors or family in the area learn much more than names and dates while they study the holdings of libraries and archives in the area.
Discover Ohio can be a helpful tool when planning a genealogical research trip throughout the state. Build your own itinerary, find local restaurants and hotels, and look for fun activities to do on your off time to get to know the areas in which your ancestors lived.
