Discover Atlanta blues 101

If you read this column regularly, you know that certain groups and clubs occur over and over. Let this article serve as a guide for those just beginning to explore the wealth of great live blues music in and around Atlanta.

CLUBS

Certain clubs around town have live music at least 6 days a week. A couple are open and have live blues 7 days a week! Here are the top picks:

Northside Tavern'

Northside Tavern has live blues every day of the week! It is the home base of The Breeze Kings, Uncle Sugar and Mudcat., It's anything but fancy, but you can't beat the music!

Blind Willie's

Blind Willie's hosts local and national acts six days a week with frequent special events on Sunday. Regular performers here include legendary local blues performers like Tommy Brown, Sandra Hall, and Houserocker Johnson.

Fat Matt's

Fat Matt's is a barbeque restaurant, not a club. It has a tiny performance space but it features some of the best local performers around, including Ross Pead, Tony Bryant, JT Speed, and others. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced, too! It is open 7 days a week.

Darwin's Blues Club

Darwin's, in Marietta, is a very popular club which is open six days a week. It features the best local talent and occasional national acts. It is well-known for its acoustic jam with Bill Sheffield on Tuesday, its electric jam on Thursdays with the Cazonovas, and The Truett Lollis Trio every Monday as well as the guest artists. The food here is, in my opinion, the best of all of the clubs.

Nik's Place

Nik's Place is located in an antebellum farmhouse right off the Square in Marietta. It specializes in Greek food and offers live music most nights. Among the musicians who play here regularly are Rod Hamdallah and Barry Richman.

MUSICIANS

This is just a short list of some of the blues musicians to keep an eye out for locally. Obviously, it does not include every great musician in the area. My main reason for choosing these bands is that they are excellent and they play very often. Click on their names to learn more about them.
